Utilizing an effective slash and throw offense with driving layups, the Middleburg High boys basketball team took on nine win, two loss Creekside and won 57-44 in non-district play Tuesday night at Middleburg. The Broncos jumped to a 31-10 halftime lead behind 12 points by senior Malcolm Bernard who finished with 20. Middleburg goes to 8-4.

Ponte Vedra Nease quarterback Joseph Capriglione threw just one first half touchdown pass against the Clay Blue Devils but the 7-0 lead stuck until the halftime break in the preseason opener for both teams Thursday at Nease. Capriglione used a quickhitting passing game to perplex the hard defensive rush employed by the Blue Devils who lost a 70 yard touchdown romp by running back Joe Cooper via a holding penalty.

The Creekside Knights got off to a rough start with Oakleaf's Josh McMcClintic picking up an opening kickoff fumble and quarterback Brandon Pillsbury throwing a 40 yard touchdown pass to Fredrick Martin, but the Knights of Creekside prevailed with steady offense behind quarterback Adam Sandin and hard running by Livio Hoxha to play to a 34-19 third quarter lead with mainly varsity players in their preseason opener Wednesday night. Creekside wideout Mitchel Renda caught key passes for the Knights. Creekside defender Samuel Adams picked off one of three Pillsbury passes and went the distance for a touchdown in the second half. Oakleaf got a 99 yard pass play from Pillsbury to Martin nullified by a sideline infraction as the entire Oakleaf team flooded the field as Martin blazed into the end zone.

Hosted by the Middleburg Athletic Association at Middleburg High School, nearly 70 football teams from the American Youth Football League converged and played from sunrise to sundown in 15 minutes quarters. The SJRYFC teams playing will be Middleburg Broncos, PAL Packers, Oakleaf Knights, Villages Panthers, Mandarin Hurricanes, West Augustine Jackets, Ponte Vedra Lions and the South Menendez Junior Falcons.

Two citizens decide to make a difference, one creek at a time. Eric Bersinger and Josh Woods, coworkers at Jacksonville's Ruth Chris Steak House and Mandarin/Julington Creek residents, found a common interest in kayaking and preserving our natural areas. Both members of the St. Johns Riverkeeper organization, the two founded the Durbin Creek Wilderness Society for the purpose of cleaning and maintaining the Bartram Canoe Trail, located on the westermost point of the Julington-Durbin Creek Preserve. Their plan is to engage other citizen activists to adopt our waterways in a similar fashion.

MS 150 Warmup: Sawgrass to St. Augustine

Bicyclists lined Highway A1A from Sawgrass to the Vilano Beach Causeway as they rode either 30 miles or 45 miles in support of the MS150 to be held in October. Cycling teams signed on for the October MS 150 2-day event got a chance to work on teamwork and strategy for finishing the 150 mile trek from St. Augustine to Daytona Beach.

Save Cross Country 5K

On July 2, 2011, fans of cross country running from across the northeast Florida region traveled to Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns County to raise funds to keep their sport alive at the high school level in Duval County. Sponsored by Doug and Jane Alred of 1st Place Sports, all proceeds from the event will go to the 17 high schools in the Jacksonville area in danger of losing "the sport you don't play," as the slogan read on wrist bands of the competitors. The event raised over five thousand dollars toward the preservation of cross county in Duval County high schools. High school cross country teams represented included Bartram Trail, Creekside, Fleming Island, Lee, White, Sandalwood, Stanton, Baldwin, Nease and Mandarin. Some of the most excited to finish were Micah Drum, 13 (932) Matthew Taylor (749) and Gabriel Moran, 12 (702).

The "St. Augustine Wild Reserve" assists Florida Fish and Wildlife by caring for animals that have been confiscated or surrendered by their former owners. The "St. Augustine Wild Reserve" has over 80 different animals in it's sanctuary for you to observe up-close and personal. Two hour guided tours are available for single person or groups with trained professionals. You will see lions, Siberian tigers, black leopards, wolves, bobcats. The tour is very educational as well, one can learn about the behavior of the animals and the story behind each one.
Wakeboarding fans got a shot at the Black Creek River with wakeboard coach Tore Hewlett as part of the GodFirstCamp.com wakeboard camp. Joining Hewlett on Wednesday were Sami Sadler, 7, of Mandarin; James Sadler, 15, of Mandarin; Liam Bannon, 10, Fleming Island; Jack Branston, 18, Middleburg, and Conner Payne, 15, of St. Johns County.

State Representative candidate Kim Kendall, a Republican from St. Johns County, got a seminar ride from Captain Jay Winegeart, president of the St. Johns Bar Pilot Association, Monday morning. Winegeart took Kendall and First Coast area City Councilman Gavin Rollins on one of his Bar Pilot boats from its' Mayport based facility to Jaxport near Talleyrand and spoke about economic and environmental concerns dealing with improving Jacksonville's cargo ship business. Winegeart's Bar Pilot Association supervises all incoming and outgoing cargo ships into the downtown Jacksonville economy. Kendall was informed on dredging issues, improvement of the St. John's River shipping corridor and the future of the River with regard to other area ports, such as Savannah, Ga., Charleston, SC, and Ft. Lauderdale.

Lady Bears Head to State Final Four: Again

Bartram Trail got a fifth inning home run by Abby Tewey that scored three runs to lead the Lady Bears to an 8-0 Region 1-4A championship win over Wakulla and put the Lady Bears in the Class 4A state Final Four for a second consecutive year. Bartram Trail was Class 5A champion in 2008 and 2009 and a Class 4A state semifinalist last year.

Mustangs Outlast Bears 3-1: MHS Tanner Settles 2RBIs in 7th

After tying the host Bartram Trail Bears baseball team, the Mandarin Mustangs got key hits in the sixth and seventh innings to win 3-1 Tuesday night. Bartram Trail scored first with Nick Smith hitting an RBI single to score Joe Davidson in the third inning. Both teams went scoreless until the seventh after Mandarin left two runners on base in the sixth after Spencer Harmon's RBI single tied the game. In the seventh, a 2-RBI single by Tanner Settles iced the game for the Mustangs. Mandarin improved to 9-4.
